What does the work involve?
- Most one-day cleanup activities focus on picking up litter and removing trash and debris from public spaces. Depending on the location and the needs of the area, volunteers may also be asked to do light weeding or other simple maintenance tasks. The scope of work will be discussed with your group in advance so everyone knows what to expect.
- For path cleanups, the typical work area is the mowed area immediately off the path, generally within approximately 10–15 feet on either side. This helps keep the cleanup focused on areas that are accessible and appropriate for volunteers while allowing the City to continue maintaining the path itself. Volunteers are not expected to work in steep, heavily overgrown, otherwise difficult-to-access areas, or directly in any creek or water.
What should volunteers expect?
- One-day cleanups are intended to be short-term, organized volunteer activities rather than ongoing maintenance commitments. Public Works staff will help coordinate the location and scope of the work, and groups may be provided with supplies such as trash bags, gloves, and litter grabbers, depending on the activity.
- Volunteers should be prepared to work outdoors and wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Activities may involve walking, bending, and carrying light bags of litter. Please let us know in advance if your group has accessibility needs or if you would like to discuss a cleanup area that is more accessible.
- Please note: One-day cleanups are intended for litter removal and other light maintenance activities. They do not include major landscaping, tree work, construction, or other specialized maintenance tasks. The City will determine the appropriate scope of work for each location.
