Community Volunteer Project -- Siberian Elm Removal for the Denver Zoo

Monday, September 14th, 2026 from 8:00am to 12:00pm (MT)

About

Siberian elm is a List C noxious weed in Colorado and frequently invades our native grassland ecosystems. It also happens to be a favored food source for numerous animals at the Denver Zoo, including elephants, giraffes, and gorillas, and the leafy material from the plants we cut during the event will be donated to them. Volunteers will wear gloves, long sleeves, shoes, and eye protection while working on the project. Hand saws and PPE (if needed) will be provided. OSMP staff will teach about the impacts of invasive plants and how they are controlled by explaining certain management methodologies, as well as providing background on the zoo’s browse program.

***Pets are not allowed.
