As autumn fades and winter’s constellations take the stage, the Leonid meteor shower offers streaks of light across a moonless sky. Explore the cosmos through telescopes guided by local experts, and learn how the night sky transforms with the seasons. From the delicate Pleiades to the bold arrival of Orion, discover what makes winter stargazing so extraordinary.
Bring your red-light flashlights and Join OSMP staff and partners from the Longmont Astronomical Society, DarkSky Colorado, and CU’s Fiske Planetarium for telescope viewing, expert interpretation, and skywatching tips for all experience levels.
Together, we’ll explore:
- Meteors that radiate from the constellation Leo, but can appear anywhere in the sky for the Leonids meteor shower.
- Tips for observing under dark-sky conditions.
Telescopes are provided on this family-friendly event! All ages and experience levels are welcome.
What to bring:
- Red flashlight or headlamp – Helps preserve night vision (avoid white light)
- Warm layers – Nights cool off quickly, even in summer
- Blanket and camp chair
- Water and snacks – Stargazing is better when you’re hydrated and happy!
- Binoculars – Some deep space objects are better viewed with simple binoculars instead of large telescopes!
